SNCR honours UBC j-school social media project

It gives me great pleasure to say that a social media project at the UBC journalism school has been recognised in the SNCR Excellence in New Communications Awards for 2010.

The joint project with CBC Radio 3 to create a Canadian music online encyclopedia, the Canadian Music Wiki, won a Commendation of Merit in the co-creation and collaboration media category of the SNCR awards.

The awards are sponsored by the Society for New Communications Research, a research and education foundation that looks t the latest developments in new media and communications, and their effect on traditional media, culture and society.

“We are honored to recognize the Canadian Music Wiki through this awards program,” commented SNCR Senior Fellow Paul Gillin, chair of SNCR’s Excellence Awards committee.

The awards honour individuals and organizations that are pioneering the use of social media and digital technologies in business, media, nonprofits/NGOs, education, government and technology.

The music wiki was launched in May, the result of a partnership between the UBC journalism school and CBC Radio 3.

It was created by UBC journalism graduate Amanda Ash as part of her Masters of Journalism degree, based on an idea by CBC Radio 3 director Steve Pratt and myself.

The wiki project was also a finalist in the 2010 Canadian Online Publishing Awards.
