2012 Online Journalism Awards finalists announced

Finalists for the 2012 Online Journalism Awards were announced today by the Online News Association and its academic partner, the School of Communication at the University of Miami. Eight awards come with a total of $33,000 in prize money, courtesy of theJohn S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Gannett Foundation, which also is supporting innovative investigative work with two $2,500 awards.

“Once again, we were overwhelmed with the quality of work submitted,” said ONA Board member Josh Hatch, who, along with the Associated Press’ Director of Global Product Operations Ruth Gersh, co-chairs the Online Journalism Awards Committee. “The use of multimedia, the power of data and social media, and the ability of journalists to integrate them to inform, entertain, and emotionally connect with readers has set a high water mark.”

Neighborhood news site wins national journalism award

Next Door Media’s PhinneyWood.com site in Seattle has won the prestigious national Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for deadline reporting.

Founder Cory Bergman says:

PhinneyWood provided around-the-clock coverage of the series of devastating Greenwood arson fires last October, routinely breaking new developments in one of Seattle’s biggest stories of the year. Coverage included minute-by-minute updates posted on PhinneyWood and Twitter, as well as photos, video and an interactive map of the arsonist’s trail of destruction.

After the fires, PhinneyWood provided dozens of stories on the community outpouring and efforts by burned-out businesses to recover. Last week the suspect in the case admitted to 11 counts of arson.

In many ways, the award belongs to the neighborhood of Greenwood itself. Neighbors helped provide PhinneyWood with a steady stream of tips, comments and tweets.

This is Next Door Media’s second national journalism award in the last year. MyBallard.com won a national Online Journalism Award last October for community collaboration, beating several large metro newspapers for the honor.

Interview with Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Mark Fiore

Animated cartoonist Mark Fiore was just named the Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial cartooning. CyberJournalist.net interviewed Fiore back in 2002, shortly after he won the Online Journalism Award for commentary. In this Q&A with CyberJournalist.net’s Jonathan Dube, Fiore explains why “technology doesn’t make the cartoon” and that the key to making an animated cartoon effective is “having something to say.”
